Baby photography - it's all in the detail

One of the questions I get asked quite a lot is, when is the best time to do baby photography.  Honestly, it depends on what kind of pictures you are looking for. If you want sleeping newborn posed photographs, then the first two weeks are best.  If you want smiles and something a little more interactive, when they are that little bit older is better - their faces are a bit fuller, their eyes brighter and they have more control over their movements so you can introduce favourite toys for them to hold and interact with.

The little boy on my latest shoot was 10 weeks old.  He had a head full of dark brown hair, beautiful big brown eyes, lovely skin and that natural curiosity I love to see in children - it was clear we were going to get some lovely images. Mum and Dad were worried how the session would go as he’d been a little grumpy, but a photograph is literally a split second in time - he doesn’t need to be smiley and happy for the whole session, just a second or two will do!

Ishaan was wearing two beautiful gold bracelets which were his father’s from when he was a baby. He also had a black threaded bracelet around each wrist which is believed to keep evil away. Such strong sentiment is so beautiful and important so I really wanted to focus on those and make sure we captured them in the photographs.

At this age, you can expect much more awake time than sleepy time and moving them about while they are asleep is much trickier.  When they are a little older, most of the photos I go for are awake ones, or if they do nod off, natural sleeping ones.  Little Ishaan did nod off a couple of times and fell into a deep sleep right at the end so we could do some more creative shots with his gorgeous little feet.

Despite any fears of grumpiness, we got through a few different styles and even some outfit changes.  The little one and his parents did brilliantly and it was a lovely session to photograph.
